I downloaded 10.04 Lucid Lynx yesterday and ran the install option after trying it out as a live CD first, to see if there were any problems. All seemed OK so ran the install, borked at 30%, a fault on the CD. By that time it had repartitioned and reformatted the drive so there was no reverting to the original installation.
Put the older CD in and reinstalled 9.10 then ran the upgrade overnight.
Working fine this morning and the computer is the fastest it has ever been, remarkably faster then the much newer and higher spec laptop running Vista. _________________ This too shall pass away. |

I have a workmate who is an absolute master at buggering computers.
He brought me his Packard Bell EasyNote laptop to fix, took about twenty minutes to boot and would only work in safe mode.
It supposedly had a hidden partition from which you could reinstall Vista but he had managed to corrupt that too.
Looked on P_B's website and the model wasn't even listed so obtaining a reinstall disk wasn't an option and if it had been they would likely have expected money for it, which was pretty much out of the question.
Bunged Ubuntu 10.4 on it and he is staggered at how much better than Vista it is. Boots in no time flat (although it is still slower than my six year old home built desktop
Straight online with the wireless network he has had so much bother with previously.
The amount of available free software has amazed him and it is gratifying to see how quickly he has come to terms with the basics (I sent him away to play with it and come back with questions/problems. There were none - and he is a self-confessed computer dunce).
Only problem with it is that it has SIS graphics and they won't release any drivers or engineering details from which Linux developers could create drivers so the display is somewhat limited but perfectly adequate for his requirements, until someone reverse-engineers the drivers. _________________ This too shall pass away. |
